Milwaukee
A City Of Readers
Video Reading Project For Teachers and Families
A group of concerned educators, librarians and citizens collaborated to develop a program that would motivate students to become better readers. Partially sponsored by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and facilitated through the Nehemiah Project, guest readers from our community will read a book, accessible on video, that is age appropriate and representing the diversity of our city. Our readers come from service occupations, political arenas, the business community, arts and sciences and many other areas.
The videos can be used by Milwaukee educators and parents and will be made “live” through a website link every Monday and Wednesday beginning Nov. 8, 2021. Through the end of 20-21, all books will be targeted for K-4 through 3rd grade with expansion planned for 2022. There is no cost to any teacher or parent to access the videos. Each reader will share their personal reasons for loving reading, questions, and thoughts about the book.
Fostering a love of reading can only be enhanced by students experiencing community members reading to them, increasing their passion for and involvement with literacy. We encourage everyone who views the videos the share them with others to enjoy and share with a child.
Hopefully, through this initiative and many others, “Milwaukee, A City of Readers” will be a reality for all the children in our community.
